Maine car insurance prices can vary between drivers, vehicles, locations, coverage selections, and insurance companies. Driving history, driver experience, annual mileage, vehicle use, household drivers, prior coverage, vehicle characteristics, garaging location, policy limits, deductibles, and available discounts may all affect the final premium.
The Maine Car Insurance Calculator above provides educational monthly, six-month, and annual estimates based on the categories you select. It can help illustrate how common driver, vehicle, usage, and coverage variables may change a modeled insurance cost before you move from a car insurance estimate to a personalized quote.
The displayed result is an estimated range, not a guaranteed premium, insurance offer, approval, or binding quote. Insurance companies use their own filed rates, underwriting rules, eligibility requirements, discounts, policy forms, and application information. CarInsuranceEstimate.org is an independent informational website and is not an insurance company, insurance agency, or Maine government agency.
Maine Minimum Car Insurance Requirements
Maine requires owners and operators of vehicles registered or required to be registered in the state to maintain financial responsibility. The minimum liability limits are commonly written as 50/100/25: $50,000 for bodily injury or death involving one person, $100,000 for bodily injury or death involving more than one person in one accident, and $25,000 for property damage. [1]
A combined single liability limit of at least $125,000 can also satisfy Maine’s minimum liability requirement. Maine additionally requires at least $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident in uninsured and underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage, plus at least $2,000 per person in Medical Payments coverage. [1]
Bodily Injury per Person
This is the minimum liability amount available for covered bodily injury or death involving one person when an insured driver is legally responsible for an accident.
Bodily Injury per Accident
This is the total minimum bodily injury liability limit for all people injured or killed in one covered accident, subject to the $50,000 per-person limit.
Property Damage per Accident
Property Damage Liability may help pay for covered damage an insured driver causes to another vehicle, building, fence, guardrail, or other property.
Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist
Maine requires at least $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident in UM/UIM bodily injury coverage for qualifying losses caused by uninsured, underinsured, or hit-and-run drivers.
Medical Payments per Person
Maine requires at least $2,000 per person in Medical Payments coverage for qualifying medical expenses involving the insured and passengers.
Combined Single Limit Option
A combined single liability limit of at least $125,000 can satisfy the state’s minimum bodily injury and property damage liability requirement.
Maine Minimum Coverage vs. Full Coverage
A Maine minimum policy includes required liability insurance, uninsured and underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage, and Medical Payments coverage. Liability may address qualifying claims made by other people when an insured driver is legally responsible for an accident.
Minimum coverage generally does not include collision or comprehensive protection for physical damage to the policyholder’s vehicle. The term full coverage commonly describes a policy combining state-required protection with collision and comprehensive coverage, but it is not a standardized insurance product. Reviewing car insurance coverage basics can help drivers understand the role of each protection before comparing prices.
| Coverage level | What the calculator models | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Maine minimum | A policy based on 50/100/25 liability, at least 50/100 in UM/UIM bodily injury coverage, and $2,000 per person in Medical Payments coverage. | It generally does not include collision or comprehensive protection for physical damage to the insured vehicle. |
| Standard protection | An educational calculator category using Maine’s overall marketplace average as its starting point. | “Standard protection” is an editorial modeling label, not a uniform policy package offered by every Maine insurer. |
| Full coverage | A modeled combination of Maine-required coverage with collision and comprehensive protection. | Collision generally addresses covered crash damage. Comprehensive generally addresses covered non-collision losses such as theft, fire, vandalism, hail, flooding, animal contact, or falling objects. |
| Higher-limit full coverage | Full coverage with a higher editorial baseline for liability, UM/UIM, and physical-damage protection. | This category produces a higher estimate because the model assumes broader financial protection than the other coverage selections. |
What Affects Car Insurance Costs in Maine?
Maine insurers can consider multiple driver, household, vehicle, coverage, and location characteristics when calculating a premium. Each company applies its own filed rates, underwriting standards, claims experience, expense assumptions, and available discounts.
Driving Record
At-fault accidents, moving violations, serious convictions, and previous claims may affect underwriting, discounts, surcharges, and the price offered by an insurer.
Driver Age and Experience
Younger and newly licensed drivers may receive different rates from drivers with longer driving histories. Pricing can also change as drivers gain experience or enter older age groups.
Annual Mileage and Vehicle Use
A long commute or high annual mileage generally creates more road exposure. Business use, delivery work, ridesharing, and other uses may require different underwriting or policy terms.
Vehicle Characteristics
Vehicle value, repair expense, safety equipment, theft exposure, performance, body style, and model-specific claims experience may affect the cost of applicable coverage.
Garaging Location
Insurers may consider geographic claim information reflecting differences in traffic, crashes, severe weather, animal collisions, theft, and local repair expenses.
Coverage and Deductibles
Higher limits and broader protection generally cost more. A higher collision or comprehensive deductible may reduce the premium while increasing the amount paid after a covered loss.
How the Maine Car Insurance Calculator Works
The calculator uses May 2026 Maine marketplace data published by Experian as reference points. Experian reported an average cost of approximately $105 per month for minimum coverage, $139 per month across Maine policies sold through its automotive insurance marketplace, and $142 per month for full coverage. [3]
The calculator applies a simplified educational process similar to the one described in our explanation of how car insurance estimates work. It does not reproduce a specific insurer’s proprietary underwriting or rating system.
Select a Coverage Baseline
The model starts at $105 for Maine minimum coverage, $139 for standard protection, $142 for full coverage, or $163 for higher-limit full coverage.
Apply Driver Factors
The selected age range and driving-record category apply simplified multipliers. These are editorial assumptions rather than insurer-filed Maine rates.
Apply Vehicle and Usage Factors
Vehicle year, vehicle type, annual mileage, and selected deductible apply additional adjustments. The deductible does not change the calculator’s minimum-coverage baseline.
Display an Estimated Range
The calculator rounds the adjusted monthly amount and generally displays a range approximately 10% below and 10% above it, followed by six-month and annual projections.
Ways to Compare Maine Car Insurance Costs
A useful comparison keeps the drivers, vehicles, liability limits, UM/UIM limits, Medical Payments coverage, physical-damage deductibles, optional endorsements, annual mileage, and payment schedule consistent across every quote. Drivers can compare car insurance providers using equivalent policy information.
Compare Equivalent Policies
Use the same drivers, vehicles, liability limits, UM/UIM limits, Medical Payments amount, deductibles, annual mileage, and vehicle use for every quote.
Review Available Discounts
Ask about multi-vehicle, auto-and-home, mature-driver, good-student, low-mileage, safety-device, anti-theft, payment, and paperless discounts.
Choose a Manageable Deductible
A higher collision or comprehensive deductible may reduce the premium, but the selected amount should remain affordable after an unexpected covered loss.
Verify the Insurer and Producer
Confirm that the insurer and any agent or producer are authorized to conduct business in Maine before paying or providing sensitive application information.
Confirm Every Driver
Accurately list household members, permitted drivers, regular operators, and young drivers who may have access to the insured vehicles.
Read the Declarations Page
After purchasing coverage, verify the drivers, vehicles, limits, deductibles, endorsements, effective dates, discounts, and payment schedule.
Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage in Maine
Maine requires automobile liability policies to include uninsured vehicle coverage for qualifying bodily injury caused by uninsured, underinsured, or hit-and-run drivers. The minimum required amount is $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident. [2]
For qualifying private-passenger policies, the UM/UIM bodily injury limit generally must equal the bodily injury liability limit selected by the purchaser. A purchaser may elect a lower permitted UM/UIM limit by signing the insurer’s written rejection form before the applicable coverage becomes effective. The selected amount cannot fall below Maine’s minimum requirement.
Uninsured Motorist Protection
This coverage may address qualifying bodily injury losses when the responsible driver does not have applicable liability insurance.
Underinsured Motorist Protection
UIM may apply when the responsible driver has insurance but the available bodily injury limits are lower than the applicable UM/UIM protection.
Hit-and-Run Accidents
Maine’s uninsured vehicle coverage can apply to qualifying bodily injury involving an unidentified hit-and-run driver, subject to the policy and claim requirements.
Bodily Injury Coverage
Maine’s required UM/UIM protection addresses qualifying bodily injury. It does not generally repair the insured vehicle or pay other property-damage losses.
How Medical Payments Coverage Works in Maine
Maine requires at least $2,000 per person in Medical Payments coverage. Subject to the policy, this protection can pay qualifying medical expenses incurred by the insured and passengers following an automobile accident. [1]
Coverage Regardless of Fault
Medical Payments coverage may respond to qualifying expenses without first requiring a final determination of which driver caused the accident.
Per-Person Limit
The applicable amount is generally a per-person policy limit. Eligible expenses above that limit are not automatically covered by MedPay.
Higher Limits May Be Available
Maine’s Bureau of Insurance states that insurers may offer Medical Payments limits above the required $2,000 minimum.
Not the Same as PIP
Maine-required Medical Payments coverage is not the same as the broader Personal Injury Protection system used in some no-fault states.
Proof of Insurance and Maine Vehicle Registration
Maine requires evidence of insurance or other qualifying financial responsibility when registering a vehicle. A law enforcement officer must also request proof when a driver is stopped for a moving violation or is involved in an accident that must be reported under Maine law. [4]
Maintain Active Coverage
An insurance card or electronic document is valid proof only when the underlying policy is active and applies to the vehicle and driver.
Electronic Proof Is Permitted
Maine permits proof of insurance to be displayed electronically on a portable device when requested by law enforcement.
Device Privacy Is Preserved
Displaying electronic proof does not give a law enforcement officer consent to access unrelated information stored on the device.
A Quote Is Not Proof
A calculator result, quote request, application, payment attempt, or confirmation screen does not establish that insurance has been issued and activated.
What Happens If a Maine Driver Does Not Maintain Insurance?
Failure to produce evidence of active liability insurance or financial responsibility is prima facie evidence of uninsured operation. A person also violates Maine law by presenting insurance evidence for coverage that was not in effect at the relevant time. [4]
Traffic Infraction
A violation can result in a forfeiture of at least $100 and no more than $500.
License or Registration Suspension
Following an adjudication, the Secretary of State can suspend the person’s license, vehicle registration, or right to apply for those privileges.
Proof May Be Required
The suspension continues until the person provides the required proof of financial responsibility to the Secretary of State.
Valid Prior Coverage Can Resolve a Charge
A complaint may be dismissed when the driver timely provides satisfactory evidence that qualifying coverage was active at the time of the alleged violation.
Maine Mature Driver Insurance Discount
Maine law requires automobile insurers to provide a discount on liability, Medical Payments, and collision coverage for qualifying drivers age 55 or older who complete an approved motor vehicle accident-prevention course. [5]
Approved Course Required
The course must qualify for Maine’s mature-driver insurance discount. An unrelated course may not satisfy the requirement.
Discount Applies for 36 Months
The mature-driver discount generally applies for 36 months after successful course completion.
Course Must Be Repeated
A new approved course must generally be completed every three years to continue qualifying for the discount.
Driving History Conditions Apply
The discount may not apply when the insured or another household member had an at-fault accident, moving violation, or license suspension during the previous three years.
Cancellation and Nonrenewal Rights in Maine
Maine regulates when and why an insurer may cancel or decline to renew a personal automobile policy. The company must provide written notice and the legally required notice period. Outside the initial underwriting period, the notice must also provide the reason and information about the insured’s hearing rights. [6]
Initial 60-Day Period
During the initial underwriting period, an insurer may generally cancel for a lawful reason when the insured receives notice before the policy’s 60th day.
Cancellation After 60 Days
After 60 days, or for a renewal policy, cancellation is limited to grounds such as nonpayment, fraud, material misrepresentation, policy violations, or qualifying license suspensions or revocations.
Required Notice Period
Nonpayment cancellation requires at least 10 days’ notice. Other permitted cancellation grounds generally require at least 20 days’ notice.
Right to Request a Hearing
For qualifying cancellation or nonrenewal actions, the insured may request a hearing before the Superintendent of Insurance. The request generally must be received within 30 days after the notice was received.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Maine
Maine defines a reportable accident as one occurring on a public way or in a place where public traffic may reasonably be anticipated that results in bodily injury, death, or apparent property damage of at least $2,000. A reportable accident must be reported immediately by the quickest available means to the appropriate law enforcement authority. [7]
Check for Injuries and Hazards
Call 911 when emergency assistance is needed. Move away from active traffic when it is safe and lawful to do so.
Exchange Information
Collect driver license, registration, insurance, contact, license plate, passenger, and witness information.
Document the Scene
When safe, photograph vehicle damage, road conditions, traffic controls, debris, weather conditions, and nearby property.
Notify the Insurer
Report the accident according to the policy’s notice requirements and retain the claim number, photographs, estimates, receipts, reports, and written correspondence.
What If a Maine Driver Cannot Find Coverage?
Most Maine drivers can obtain insurance through the voluntary market. A driver who cannot find a company willing to provide coverage may be eligible to purchase a policy through the Maine Automobile Insurance Plan. [10]
Shop Several Insurers First
Underwriting standards and prices differ, so a driver declined by one company may still qualify with another authorized insurer.
Work With a Certified Producer
Applying through the Maine Automobile Insurance Plan generally requires assistance from a producer certified to submit the application.
Required Coverage Is Available
The Plan offers automobile policies containing the coverage required by Maine law.
Physical-Damage Options May Be Available
Optional physical-damage coverage may also be available, subject to the Plan’s eligibility rules, forms, limits, and deductibles.

Estimate and Compare Maine Car Insurance
The Maine Car Insurance Calculator provides a starting point for understanding how coverage level, driving history, vehicle type, annual mileage, and deductible selections may affect an estimated cost. It cannot replace an application evaluated by an authorized insurance company.
Before purchasing coverage, compare multiple quotes using identical drivers, vehicles, liability limits, UM/UIM limits, Medical Payments coverage, optional protections, and deductibles. Confirm the insurer, policy number, effective date, payment schedule, exclusions, and declarations page before driving or canceling an existing policy.
